Honolulu

Written and directed by Maya Tanaka, “Honolulu” follows 12-year-old Yuki’s doomed Hawai’ian beach vacation. Based loosely on a childhood memory, the design language of the film needed to reflect the setting and the emotions Yuki goes through in this vulnerable coming-of-age story. The custom made title is informed by retro post cards, t-shirts, motel signage, and matchbooks you might find on your way to the beach. Everything comes together to accompany the surreal nature of the film, fire lobsters and all.
